FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

Functional medicine is a comprehensive investigation of all body systems. Each system is examined within the context of your environment and life experiences. It is geared to identify root causes of dysfunction or disease.

Functional medicine considers the various organs and systems of the body as parts of a larger context, which allows doctors to identify underlying causes of diseases. When you treat the root cause of a disease, it’s possible to interrupt the progression of the illness and at times reversal of it.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPOINTMENT

First, you can expect to create a thorough timeline of your health. This timeline differs from your personal and medical history because it identifies important patterns. Your health timeline identifies changes in:

  • Health patterns

  • Lifestyle factors

  • Trauma

  • Significant life events

  • Traveling

  • Behaviors/Relationships

  • Symptoms you might not realize are a piece of the puzzle

  • Anything that might be contributing to your current health today

It’s important to consider all influences, including surgeries, allergies, intolerances, and chronic health issues.

Next, we will schedule appropriate testing and propose a course of action.

Then, we track your personalized treatment progress, re-test when appropriate and necessary and make adjustments accordingly.

Functional medicine appointments include some tests similar to conventional settings. These may include blood work, urine/saliva samples, and/or imaging. The major difference is instead of isolating systems, we look at your body as a whole.

This means sometimes treatments and therapies exist beyond conventional prescription drugs and surgeries. These treatments and therapies can include but are not limited to:

  • Lifestyle modifications

  • Managing/eradicating infection

  • Mitigating harmful chemicals

  • Nutritional intervention & therapeutic food plan

  • Correction of nutritional deficiencies

  • Acupuncture

  • Blood sugar regulation

Frequently, patients have been ill for a long time and require a team of health care providers to manage symptoms and achieve optimal wellness. Referring to other providers when appropriate is of upmost importance in functional and integrative care. While therapeutic interventions at Kubovy Integrative Healthcare are completely natural in scope, prescription drugs and/or surgical procedures are often necessary to appropriately care for a patient. This office strives for inclusiveness and integration of all available health care options for the best possible patient care, and refers to other providers on a daily basis.
